South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol Arrested Following Martial Law Controversy

Seoul, South Korea – South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been arrested following his impeachment over a controversial declaration of martial law last month. The arrest, which occurred on Monday at his official residence in Seoul, marks the first time in the nation’s history that a sitting president has been detained.

This development was confirmed through The Merit Newspaper’s international correspondents, who have been closely monitoring the unfolding political crisis. Yoon’s arrest followed a tense standoff with law enforcement officers from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO). While maintaining that the investigation was illegal, Yoon eventually submitted to questioning to prevent potential violence.

The crisis began on December 3, 2024, when Yoon declared martial law, citing what he described as threats from legislative interference that hindered his ability to govern. The National Assembly swiftly annulled the declaration and, on December 14, voted to impeach him, effectively suspending his presidential powers. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has since been acting as the country’s leader.

The Constitutional Court is now deliberating on whether to uphold Yoon’s impeachment, a decision that could result in a new presidential election within 60 days or his reinstatement as president.

Yoon’s actions have divided public opinion, with thousands of supporters and opponents taking to the streets in Seoul. Supporters claim that his declaration of martial law was a necessary step to maintain order, while critics have condemned it as an abuse of power that undermined South Korea’s democratic institutions.

“This situation has placed South Korea’s democratic framework under immense strain,” said Min Joo-hyung, a political analyst in Seoul. “The Constitutional Court’s decision will determine whether the country can emerge stronger or more fragmented.”

The Merit Newspaper’s correspondents reported that protests outside Yoon’s residence have intensified since the arrest, with demonstrators on both sides demanding justice.

As South Korea waits for the Constitutional Court’s ruling, which is expected in the coming weeks, the nation faces a critical test of its democratic values. The outcome of this historic case will undoubtedly have profound implications for the country’s political future and its global reputation.
