The world of media has lost one of its most transformative figures as Ted Turner, the pioneering founder of CNN, has died at the age of 87. Turner, a bold entrepreneur and visionary broadcaster, reshaped global journalism by introducing the concept of 24-hour television news, a model that has since become the industry standard.

Born on November 19, 1938, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Turner took over his father’s struggling billboard business in his early twenties and turned it into a thriving media enterprise. His relentless drive and appetite for risk-taking led him into television, where he acquired a small UHF station in Atlanta that would eventually evolve into a media powerhouse.

In 1980, Turner launched CNN, the world’s first 24-hour news channel, despite widespread scepticism from industry experts who doubted that audiences would watch news around the clock. The gamble paid off, particularly during major global events such as the 1991 Gulf War, when CNN’s real-time coverage brought international news into living rooms like never before.

Beyond news, Turner expanded his media empire through Turner Broadcasting System, acquiring major entertainment assets and launching channels such as TBS and TNT. His influence extended beyond business, as he became known for his outspoken views on global issues, including environmental conservation and nuclear disarmament.

Turner’s legacy is also deeply rooted in philanthropy. He pledged billions of dollars to charitable causes through the United Nations Foundation, demonstrating a commitment to addressing global challenges. His efforts earned him recognition as not just a media mogul, but a humanitarian with a far-reaching vision.

The Merit Newspaper reports that despite stepping back from active management following the merger of Turner Broadcasting with Time Warner in the late 1990s, his imprint on journalism and broadcasting remained indelible. The idea that news should be immediate, continuous, and globally accessible continues to define modern media.

As tributes pour in from across the world, Ted Turner is remembered as a disruptor who defied convention and transformed how the world consumes news. His death marks the end of an era, but his legacy endures in every breaking news alert and live broadcast that connects the world in real time.
