The Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Kingsley Chinda, has come under intense political spotlight following unverified reports that he may have quietly defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), though no official confirmation has been made by the lawmaker or the National Assembly.

Chinda, who represents Obio-Akpor Federal Constituency in Rivers State—widely regarded as the political stronghold of former Governor Nyesom Wike—currently serves as the Minority Leader of the Green Chamber, a position that places him among the most influential opposition figures in the House of Representatives.
The Merit Newspaper reports that the speculation over his alleged defection emerged in recent days amid growing political realignments within Rivers State politics, with supporters and observers closely monitoring possible shifts ahead of future electoral contests.

However, despite the widespread rumours, there has been no formal announcement on the floor of the House of Representatives, no communication from the APC leadership, and no resignation or defection letter made public through official legislative channels.
Under parliamentary convention, any change of party by a sitting lawmaker is typically required to be formally declared at plenary, making the absence of such an announcement a key factor casting doubt on the authenticity of the defection claims.
Political observers note that if the reports eventually prove accurate, Chinda’s move could significantly alter the balance of opposition leadership dynamics in the National Assembly, given his current role as Minority Leader.
For now, however, the situation remains in the realm of political speculation, as stakeholders await an official statement that may either confirm or dismiss the reported defection.
