Obi-Kwankwaso Alliance Sparks Fresh 2027 Political Debate

The camp of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned opposition parties against restricting the 2027 presidential ticket to only Southern candidates, warning that such a political strategy could hand President Bola Ahmed Tinubu an easy path to re-election.

The warning comes amid growing political realignments and conversations within opposition circles ahead of the 2027 general election, especially among members of the emerging coalition platforms and major opposition parties.

According to allies of Atiku, the opposition must focus on presenting the most electable candidate capable of challenging Tinubu across all regions of the country rather than adopting what they described as “sentimental zoning arrangements” that may weaken the coalition’s electoral strength.

However, the position has generated mixed reactions among some opposition supporters, particularly members of the proposed NDC movement and supporters of Peter Obi, who argue that Atiku’s continued presidential ambition may indirectly favour Tinubu’s second-term bid.

The Merit Newspaper reports that some critics within the opposition claimed that many Nigerians may prefer retaining Tinubu for another four years rather than returning to Atiku as president, insisting that the former vice president may struggle to attract the level of nationwide support required to defeat the ruling APC in 2027.

Supporters of Obi have instead promoted a possible Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso presidential ticket, describing it as a stronger political combination capable of attracting votes from both the South-East and Northern regions.

Political analysts believe the debate reflects the growing battle for control of the opposition ahead of 2027, as parties and political blocs continue consultations over zoning, coalition building and the search for a formidable candidate to challenge Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress.
