Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, alongside prominent Yoruba leaders and political figures, gathered in Akure, Ondo State, to celebrate elder statesman and leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Reuben Fasoranti, as he marked his 100th birthday anniversary.
Among dignitaries at the centenary celebration was former Deputy National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Iyiola Omisore, who described Fasoranti as a symbol of courage, integrity and selfless leadership whose contributions to nation-building and the Yoruba race remain invaluable.
The Merit Newspaper reports that in a statement shared on his Facebook page after the event, Omisore said he was honoured to join Vice President Shettima and other distinguished Yoruba sons and daughters in celebrating the nonagenarian leader, whom he praised for decades of sacrifice and commitment to public service.
“Baba remains an exemplary leader who has devoted his life to the service of Nigeria and the Yoruba race with remarkable courage, wisdom and integrity,” Omisore stated.

He added that Fasoranti’s “legacy of selfless leadership and unwavering commitment to nation building continues to inspire generations.”
The former Osun State deputy governor further prayed for continued strength, peace and good health for the elder statesman as he begins a new chapter of life at 100.
“I wish Baba continued sound health, peace, strength and many more years of grace and fulfilment,” Omisore added.

Fasoranti, a former teacher, educationist and commissioner in the old Western Region, is widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in Yoruba socio-political affairs and democratic advocacy in Nigeria. Over the decades, he has remained a respected figure in national discourse, particularly through his leadership role in Afenifere, a group historically associated with the ideals of late sage Obafemi Awolowo.
The centenary celebration attracted political leaders, traditional rulers, elder statesmen and associates from across the country, many of whom described Fasoranti as a bridge between Nigeria’s past and future, noting that his life embodies resilience, patriotism and dedication to justice.
Observers at the event noted that the presence of Vice President Shettima at the celebration underscored the Federal Government’s recognition of Fasoranti’s contributions to national unity, democracy and socio-political development in Nigeria.
For many attendees, the celebration was not merely about age, but about honouring a man whose influence has transcended politics, ethnicity and generations.
