Abuja — In a major political development ahead of the 2027 general elections, former presidential candidate Peter Obi and ex-Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso on Sunday formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in what observers describe as a significant step toward opposition unity.

The duo were received at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja by former Bayelsa State governor Seriake Dickson, alongside top party officials and supporters. At the event, both leaders were presented with membership cards, officially confirming them as bona fide members of the party.

Speaking shortly after the ceremony, Obi said his decision to join the NDC was driven by the urgent need to reposition Nigeria through accountable leadership and people-oriented governance. He described the moment as a “moral commitment” to national rebirth.

“Nigeria needs a new direction. This is not about personal ambition but about building a system that works for the people—one that prioritises jobs, security, and education,” Obi said.

“Please let there be no litigation. Party members, please don’t go to court. We want to build a party, we are not lawyers,” Peter Obi pleads with his new party, NDC members.

Kwankwaso, in his remarks, described the move as a strategic effort to consolidate opposition forces and strengthen democratic ideals. He noted that disunity had long weakened the opposition’s chances, stressing that the new alignment signals a fresh beginning.

“This is the start of a formidable force. We are bringing together our strengths to build a disciplined and focused platform capable of delivering real change for Nigerians,” he said.

Welcoming the new members, Dickson described their entry into the NDC as historic, adding that it reflects a growing desire among political leaders to create a credible alternative platform. He assured that the party would uphold internal democracy and provide equal opportunities for all members.

Political analysts say the development marks a shift from years of fragmented opposition politics, as both Obi and Kwankwaso command strong grassroots followings through their respective movements, which are expected to significantly boost the NDC’s national spread.

The move follows months of consultations and comes amid internal challenges in other political parties, with stakeholders increasingly calling for a united front ahead of the next general elections.

With their formal entry into the NDC, attention is now turning to possible alignments within the party, including leadership structure and potential presidential ticket arrangements as preparations for 2027 gather momentum.
