As the 2026 Grammy Awards unfold tonight, Sunday, February 1, global attention will once again drift toward the Best African Music Performance category — a space created to celebrate Africa’s sonic dominance on the world stage. Yet, beneath the applause and Afrobeats playlists lies an uncomfortable question: Is the Grammys truly expanding Africa’s musical story, or simply rewarding familiarity?

This year’s nominees — Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid, Ayra Starr, Tyla, alongside Eddy Kenzo and Mehran Matin — read like a roll call of Africa’s most globally digestible exports. They are brilliant, no doubt. But brilliance should not excuse predictability.

The Grammys insist this category reflects Africa’s diversity. Still, its choices suggest otherwise. Where are the underground sounds shaping local cultures? Where are the indigenous rhythms evolving outside Western validation? Africa is not a genre, yet the nominations often behave as though it is — compressed into a few streaming-friendly names.

Ironically, the category risks becoming a popularity contest disguised as cultural recognition, rewarding artists who already enjoy Western market penetration while leaving behind those redefining African music from within the continent.

Tonight’s winner will make headlines. But the bigger story is whether the Grammys are listening deeply — or merely listening comfortably.

Until African music is judged beyond its global palatability, this category may celebrate Africa loudly, yet understand it shallowly.

And that, perhaps, is the real performance up for judgment tonight.
