Former U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has been sentenced in the high-profile New York hush money case involving payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Despite the sentencing, Trump will not face jail time, fines, or community service, as Judge Juan M. Merchan issued an unconditional discharge. This decision means the conviction will remain on his record, but it carries no immediate consequences.

The Merit Newspaper gathered through its international correspondents that the U.S. Supreme Court recently rejected Trump’s request to halt the sentencing. The court’s ruling allowed Judge Merchan to proceed with the verdict, solidifying Trump’s status as the first U.S. president-elect to be criminally convicted and sentenced prior to taking office.

Legal analysts argue that this case has set a historic precedent. The charges stem from payments made to Stormy Daniels during Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, which were allegedly concealed through falsified business records. Prosecutors maintain that the conduct is a violation of the law, while Trump’s legal team is preparing an appeal, asserting that presidential immunity should shield him from prosecution for actions taken prior to his presidency.

Despite the conviction, Trump remains eligible to assume office on January 20. However, the political and legal ramifications of this case are likely to shape his presidency if he takes the oath of office.

Prosecutors argue that no one is above the law, asserting that personal conduct unrelated to official duties cannot be covered by presidential immunity. This development has stirred heated debates among political observers and legal experts about the implications of such a case on U.S. democracy.

The Merit Newspaper will continue to provide updates on this developing story.
