Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday joined other members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the party’s governorship primary election held at Ward E3, Eiyekole, St Stephen School, Adeniji Adele, Lagos Island, describing the exercise as peaceful, orderly, and reflective of internal party democracy.

The governor arrived at the polling centre alongside his wife, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, where both participated in the direct primary process that produced the party’s governorship flag bearer.

In a post shared on his social media handle, Sanwo-Olu said it was “inspiring to see the strong turnout” of party members who came out peacefully to exercise their democratic rights with a sense of unity and commitment.

Earlier after casting his vote, the governor noted that the direct primary system strengthened grassroots participation within the party, allowing members at ward level to freely take part in the selection process.

“This process shows that our party believes in democracy and inclusiveness,” he said. “Party members have come out peacefully to exercise their civic responsibility and elect their preferred aspirant. We have seen electoral officials and party representatives carrying out their duties professionally.”

The Merit Newspaper reports that Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence in the candidacy of the incumbent deputy governor, Obafemi Hamzat, who emerged as the sole aspirant in the primary exercise, describing him as capable of sustaining the state’s development trajectory.

“I have confidence in Dr Hamzat’s capacity, competence and understanding of governance in Lagos State. He has contributed immensely to the progress we have recorded as an administration. I believe he will sustain and build on the developmental strides achieved over the years,” the governor added.

The APC governorship primary across Lagos Island and other designated wards is part of the party’s internal process to select its candidate ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Lagos State.
