Politics has once again reminded Nigerians that in the theatre of power, consistency is often the first casualty.

The decision by Lagos lawmaker and actor-turned-politician, Desmond Elliot, to challenge the outcome of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election in Surulere Constituency I has triggered confusion, controversy and public debate after a viral video allegedly showed him announcing his withdrawal from the race while the exercise was still ongoing.

Elliot, who suffered a crushing defeat to Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, reportedly polled just 270 votes against his opponent’s massive 11,385 votes. Yet, despite the public declaration believed to have signaled his exit from the contest, the embattled lawmaker is now insisting he will appeal the process and outcome.

The Merit Newspaper reports that the contradiction has left many political observers wondering: how does a candidate withdraw from an election and still seek to overturn the result of that same election?

If the withdrawal was genuine, then logically, Elliot should have no moral or political basis to challenge an exercise he voluntarily exited. But if the withdrawal statement was made under pressure, confusion, miscalculation or political strategy, then the public deserves clarity.

This is where the controversy becomes deeper than ordinary party politics. Leadership is not only about ambition; it is also about clarity, conviction and consistency. Public office holders are expected to communicate decisively, especially during critical democratic processes.

For many Nigerians who watched the viral clip circulating across Facebook and other social media platforms, Elliot’s latest position appears contradictory and politically awkward. Some have described it as desperation after defeat, while others believe the actor-politician may have been overwhelmed by the intensity of internal APC politics in Surulere.

However, beyond mockery and online criticism lies a more serious concern about the quality of internal democracy within political parties. Was the withdrawal voluntary? Was there pressure from political forces? Or was it merely a tactical move that backfired?

Whatever the truth may be, the episode has become another reminder that Nigerian politics is increasingly dominated by drama, shifting loyalties and conflicting narratives capable of confusing even the electorate.

Ironically, the same Desmond Elliot who once built his career interpreting scripts on television is now facing one of the most difficult political scripts of his career — one in which the audience is struggling to understand whether the main character truly exited the stage or simply forgot he already announced his departure.
