LAGOS — The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially unveiled Hon. Damilola Sonayon-James as its Deputy Governorship Candidate for the 2027 Lagos State governorship election.

She will run alongside the party’s governorship candidate, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, on the APC ticket in the forthcoming poll.

The decision was announced following a high-level stakeholders’ meeting attended by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), and other top party leaders.

The meeting, which underscored the party’s internal consolidation ahead of the 2027 elections, also had in attendance the Chairman of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), Prince Tajudeen Olusi.

Announcing the development, the Lagos State APC Chairman, Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi, said the selection of Sonayon-James followed extensive consultations and a rigorous screening process within the party structure.

He explained that the evaluation process considered competence, leadership capacity, grassroots acceptability, loyalty to the party, and alignment with the APC’s progressive ideals.

The Merit Newspaper reports that Ojelabi described Sonayon-James as a committed grassroots mobiliser with a strong track record in community development, youth engagement, and women empowerment initiatives across Lagos State.

According to him, her experience in governance-related activities, policy engagement, and stakeholder relations positioned her as a suitable choice for the deputy governorship role.

“The emergence of Hon. Damilola Sonayon-James reflects the party’s commitment to inclusiveness, innovation, and purposeful leadership,” Ojelabi said.

He expressed confidence that the Hamzat–Sonayon-James ticket would consolidate on the achievements of the current administration while advancing broader development goals for Lagos residents.

The APC leadership further stated that her nomination reinforces the party’s commitment to inclusive governance and increased participation of women and young people in leadership positions.
