‘Eyan Paso’ Proves It: How Pasuma Became Afrobeats’ Most Loved Fuji Icon Through ‘Hey Jago’

In the new single “Hey Jago” by Poco Lee, Shoday, and Rahman Jago, one name subtly echoes through the upbeat rhythm — Paso, the popular moniker of veteran Fuji musician, Wasiu Alabi Odetola, widely known as Pasuma.

The lyric goes:

“Hey Jago (Jago)
Emi leyan Jago (one on one)
Shoday eyan Paso
Lambo oma kinshe wazo”

Here, “Shoday eyan Paso” — which loosely translates to “Shoday is Paso’s person” — is more than just a shoutout. It reflects the deep respect and connection young artistes have for the Fuji legend.

This isn’t the first time Pasuma’s alias has been referenced in Afrobeats or Hip-hop tracks. From street anthems to club bangers, his name has become a cultural symbol, regularly dropped by both veteran and next-generation Nigerian artistes. This consistent mention underscores something deeper than mere name-dropping — it points to Paso’s massive cross-genre influence in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

As an entertainment analyst, I believe Pasuma’s popularity has long outgrown the confines of Fuji music. He is not just a Fuji icon; he is a respected brand whose entertainment appeal resonates across various music styles — from Fuji and Juju to Afrobeats and Hip-hop.

While some Fuji artistes have clashed with younger Afrobeat and Hip-hop talents over generational or stylistic differences, Pasuma stands out as a unifier. He is embraced by all — loved for his humility, relevance, and the effortless way he connects with younger artistes and audiences.

This cultural respect is not accidental. It is built on decades of consistent evolution, openness to collaboration, and an understanding of the ever-changing dynamics of the music scene.

For many entertainment critics, this is why Pasuma remains the most understanding and widely accepted Fuji artiste among his contemporaries — a legend who bridges the gap between the past and the present, the streets and the stars.
