ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday paid glowing tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, declaring that the country’s democracy has continued to grow stronger despite numerous challenges, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to economic reforms, national security and inclusive development.
In his 2026 Democracy Day address to the nation, President Tinubu described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s history and praised the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists whose struggles paved the way for the country’s uninterrupted democratic governance.
He said Democracy Day remains a reminder that the will of the people must always prevail and that democratic institutions should be continually strengthened to safeguard the nation’s future.
“Today, we celebrate not only the triumph of democracy but also the resilience, courage and patriotism of Nigerians who stood firm in defence of freedom and justice,” the President said.
Paying homage to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, widely regarded as the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, Tinubu noted that the sacrifices of Abiola and other democracy heroes must never be forgotten.

According to the President, Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule represent a remarkable achievement that should inspire greater national unity and commitment to good governance.
Tinubu defended the economic reforms introduced by his administration, insisting that the policies were necessary to reposition the country and lay a solid foundation for sustainable growth.
He acknowledged that the reforms had imposed temporary hardships on citizens but maintained that early signs of recovery were already emerging.
“My administration remains committed to building an economy that works for all Nigerians. Though the path of reform is often difficult, the choices we have made are designed to secure a better future for our people,” he stated.
The President also assured Nigerians that his government would continue to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity across the country through improved coordination among security agencies and investments in modern security infrastructure.
He reiterated his commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, protecting fundamental rights and promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
Tinubu called on political leaders, civil society groups and citizens to work together in preserving democratic values and fostering national cohesion.
“Our diversity remains our strength. We must continue to build bridges of understanding and ensure that democracy delivers hope, opportunity and prosperity to every Nigerian,” he said.
The President further pledged to expand opportunities for young people and women, improve infrastructure and create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in honour of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola and other heroes of democracy following the annulment of the 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest in the country’s history.
This year’s commemoration marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule in Nigeria and comes amid ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to consolidate economic reforms, improve security and deepen democratic governance.
