First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu

Abuja, Nigeria – Tuesday, September 23, 2025

Abuja, Nigeria — Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has revealed that a total of ₦20,456,188,924.93 has been raised under the Oluremi @65 Education Fund to support the long-delayed completion of the National Library Headquarters in Abuja.

The disclosure, made through the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), came as part of activities to mark Mrs Tinubu’s 65th birthday.

Speaking on the initiative, Mrs Tinubu said the fund was conceived to turn her milestone celebration into a legacy for education. “The National Library has remained an unfinished dream for far too long. This fund is not just about completing a building, it is about rekindling Nigeria’s commitment to knowledge, research, and innovation,” she stated.

The National Library project, first initiated in 2006, has suffered several setbacks due to funding and administrative challenges, leaving the structure abandoned for nearly two decades. Critics have often cited the delay as emblematic of Nigeria’s neglect of the education sector.

Mrs Tinubu noted that the contributions so far received were a reflection of Nigerians’ willingness to invest in the nation’s intellectual future. “This generation must give the next one the tools to think, to question, and to create. That is what this library stands for,” she added.

The Merit Newspaper reports that the education stakeholders have welcomed the development, stressing that completing the project could significantly boost academic research, literacy promotion, and Nigeria’s global educational profile.

The First Lady assured that the funds would be transparently managed and channelled directly into construction, with the hope of opening the facility to the public in the shortest possible time.
