ABUJA — Political parties and aspirants seeking elective offices in the 2027 general elections will officially begin campaigns in August and September 2026, following the release of the timetable and schedule of activities by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to the electoral body, campaigns for the Presidential and National Assembly elections will commence on August 19, 2026, and run until January 15, 2027, a day before the elections.
INEC also fixed September 9, 2026, as the commencement date for campaigns for Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections, with political activities expected to end on February 5, 2027, ahead of the polls scheduled for the following day.
The Merit Newspaper reports that the timetable further provides that political parties will conduct their primaries and nominate candidates between April 23 and May 30, 2026, paving the way for campaigns across the country.
With the campaign dates now formally set, parties are expected to intensify consultations, coalition talks and grassroots mobilization as Nigeria gradually enters the election season.
The commission urged political actors and their supporters to comply with the Electoral Act and conduct issue-based campaigns capable of promoting peaceful, free and credible elections.

The announcement provides a clearer framework for candidates and political parties preparing for the 2027 contests, while giving voters a timeline for heightened political activities nationwide.
