USA Cruise Past Paraguay as Canada Settle for Draw Against Bosnia in World Cup Openers

The United States made a powerful statement at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay, while co-host Canada had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening Group B encounter.

Playing before a capacity crowd of more than 70,000 fans in Los Angeles, the Americans produced an attacking masterclass to begin their Group D campaign on a bright note. Forward Folarin Balogun scored twice, while Giovanni Reyna added a late goal as Mauricio Pochettino’s side overwhelmed the South Americans.

Christian Pulisic was influential in the opening half, creating chances and helping the hosts establish a comfortable advantage before Paraguay pulled one back late in the game. Reyna’s strike restored the three-goal cushion and sealed a convincing victory that puts the United States in a strong position ahead of their next fixture against Australia.

The win marked one of the most impressive opening performances by the Americans in World Cup history and delighted home supporters who turned out in large numbers for the tournament co-hosts.

Earlier in Toronto, Canada fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Group B.

Bosnia took the lead in the first half through Jovo Lukic, silencing the home crowd and threatening to hand the Canadians another disappointing World Cup result. However, substitute Cyle Larin made an immediate impact, equalising shortly after coming on to rescue a point for Jesse Marsch’s side.

Canada dominated large periods of the encounter and created several opportunities through Jonathan David and Richie Laryea but were denied by resilient Bosnian defending and inspired goalkeeping.

The result handed Canada its first point in World Cup history after losing all three matches during its previous appearance in Qatar four years ago.

Canada will next face Qatar in Vancouver, while Bosnia and Herzegovina take on Switzerland. In Group D, the United States will meet Australia as Paraguay seek to revive their campaign against Turkey.

The contrasting results highlighted the ambitions of two North American co-hosts, with the United States beginning with a flourish and Canada showing resilience to avoid defeat in front of its home supporters.
