The long-awaited rehabilitation of Ogba-Ijaiye Road, a crucial link between Ogba, Agege, and Berger, has finally been completed, bringing relief to motorists and pedestrians who had endured years of hardship due to its deteriorated condition.

The construction, which commenced in late 2023, covered critical sections from Ogba Bus Stop to just beyond Excellence Hotel, affecting key landmarks such as the Ogba Bus Garage, Area G Police Station, The Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) office, and Excellence Hotel.

A visit to the newly reconstructed road on January 29, 2025, by The Merit Newspaper confirmed that the project included not only a smooth asphalt surface but also the replacement of dilapidated drainage systems with well-concreted structures.

Commending the Lagos State government for the intervention, The Merit Newspaper, which had previously drawn attention to the road’s poor condition, lauded the completion of the project. “We are pleased to see that the government responded to the cries of road users. A good road network is a fundamental infrastructure that citizens demand, and the renovation of Ogba-Ijaiye Road is a step in the right direction,” the newspaper’s editorial team stated.

Residents and business owners in the area also expressed their appreciation while urging the government to extend similar efforts to other deteriorating roads before the onset of the rainy season.

“I must commend the government for finally fixing this road. It was a nightmare for years, especially during the rainy season when it became almost impassable. Now, movement is smoother, and businesses can thrive again,” said Mr. Peter Arnold, a trader near the Ogba Bus Garage.

Similarly, Mrs. Adejoke Olaniyi, a resident of the area, noted that the reconstructed drainage system would help prevent the frequent flooding that had plagued the community. “The previous drainage was always clogged, leading to stagnant water and terrible road conditions. The new drainage system is a welcome relief,” she remarked.

Another road user, Mr. Chinedu Okeke, a commercial bus driver, described the new road as a major improvement. “Before now, passengers avoided this route because of the potholes. Now, it’s a different story. I just hope the government maintains it properly,” he said.

While praising the Lagos State government for the successful completion of the project, The Merit Newspaper called for similar attention to other neglected roads in the state, particularly before the rainy season to prevent flooding and further infrastructural damage.
