During the video call between Davido and IShowSpeed

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

When American streamer Darren Watkins Jr., popularly known as IShowSpeed, celebrated his 21st birthday in Nigeria on Wednesday, January 21, the event went beyond cake, cheers and camera flashes. A simple video call between IShowSpeed and Nigerian music superstar David Adeleke, professionally known as Davido, unexpectedly ignited a broader conversation about education, communication and success in the modern world.

During the video call, Davido joined the birthday celebration from Paris, France, where he was attending Fashion Week. Their exchange was friendly and light-hearted, but one line stood out to many viewers. In his excitement, IShowSpeed told Davido, “You should have came out here.” Grammatically, the correct expression would be “You should have come out here.”

To some, it was just a harmless mistake made in a casual conversation. To others, especially language purists and educators, it was another example of how poor grammar often attracts public scrutiny—particularly when it comes from a global figure with millions of followers.

However, beyond the grammar, the moment raises a deeper and more important question: does formal education truly determine success in life?

Success Beyond the Classroom
IShowSpeed’s rise to global fame did not follow the traditional academic path many societies consider ideal. Findings by The Merit Newspaper reveal that the American streamer completed his high school education in 2023 after attending Cincinnati College Preparatory Academy and Purcell Marian High School. His journey through school was reportedly challenging, marked by poor grades linked to excessive absences during a period of online schooling. Eventually, he caught up and graduated, choosing to focus more seriously on his streaming career.

Today, that decision has paid off in ways few classrooms could predict. IShowSpeed is now one of the most recognisable young content creators in the world, commanding millions of views, lucrative brand deals and international relevance. His visit to Nigeria alone attracted massive attention, underscoring his influence among young people across continents.

This reality supports a long-standing argument: education does not automatically guarantee success, just as limited academic performance does not automatically result in failure. History is filled with examples of individuals who struggled in school yet excelled in business, entertainment, sports and innovation.

Why Education Still Matters
Yet, acknowledging that education does not solely determine success does not mean formal learning is irrelevant. Education remains a key foundation for personal growth, critical thinking, and long-term stability. It provides tools for understanding the world, making informed decisions, and building a sustainable career.

Even for self-made stars like IShowSpeed, basic literacy, communication skills, and exposure to diverse ideas are essential in navigating global platforms and managing brand deals. More importantly, education helps people adapt when trends change, industries evolve, or unexpected challenges arise.

In a world where digital fame can be fleeting, education offers a safety net and a broader set of opportunities. It remains the backbone for those who want to build not just a momentary brand, but a lasting legacy.

IShowSpeed’s Nigerian birthday moment, while entertaining, is more than just a viral clip—it is a reminder that success is not a single path. A grammar mistake does not erase the hard work behind his rise, but it does highlight the power of language in shaping public perception. The real lesson is that education and success are not mutually exclusive. Formal schooling may not guarantee fame, but it strengthens the foundation upon which true, sustainable success is built.
